Southern University’s Trayvean Scott named to 2020 NCAA Pathways Program

Indianapolis, IN.— Southern University Deputy Director of Athletics & Chief Operating Officer, Dr. Trayvean Scott is one of 20 senior-level athletics administrators from across the country selected to participate in the 2020 NCAA Pathways Program. Dr. Scott was chosen for the program by the NCAA leadership development office, in partnership with the Board of Governors Committee to promote cultural diversity and equity.

Throughout the yearlong program, participants engage in a series of experiential learning opportunities focused on advancing them to the top role in an athletics department or conference, while building their skills to thrive in their current duties. This includes a focus on how to thrive in the ever-evolving intercollegiate athletics landscape shaped by recent prominent developments in society. Scott is one of 10 NCAA Division I participants in the program.

The active learning curriculum features a diverse mix of case study assignments, higher education and athletics leadership engagement, exploration of culture development, and insight into hiring practices and interview preparation.

“The 2020-21 Pathway cohort represents a diverse group of administrators who have demonstrated impressive leadership capabilities and potential to flourish as college athletics’ next wave of capable decision-makers,” Merritt said. “We are immensely excited to play a role in guiding these individuals along their professional journeys.

“Each program participant is mentored by a current NCAA athletics director and a current university chancellor or president who have committed to helping the Pathway participants grow during the program and after completing it.

“The fact that Trayvean was selected for this program is a testament to his talents, accomplishments and potential future impact in collegiate athletics administration,” said Southern Athletic Director, Roman Banks. “Trayvean is instrumental in the day-to-day success of the Southern Athletics, particularly in every aspect of the day-to-day operations of our athletics program.” He is an accomplished administrator and a consummate leader who has a tremendous future in college sports.

“The program starts in late June with a week-long virtual session and continues with in-person quarterly meetings throughout the year, and culminates in June 2021 at the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics convention in Orlando, Florida.

These in-person sessions will include opportunities to engage with university and college presidents who will shed light on the role of athletic directors, reinforce the value of athletics on campus and provide candid answers to participants’ questions.

“I am extremely honored to be selected for such an incredible NCAA program,” said Scott. “This is another example of the wonderful investment the NCAA has made in providing opportunities for athletics leadership development. Throughout this yearlong program, I am excited to be challenged in a variety of areas and experience unmatched professional growth to help me become a better administrator, as we all continue to strive to provide a positive experience to student-athletes every day.”

Over the past 22 years, the acclaimed Pathway Program (formerly the Fellows Program) has produced over 200 alumni. Fifty-five of those participants (over 25%) have become directors of athletics or conference commissioners, including 46 who identify as either minorities or females. The 2019 Pathway Program alone has produced five athletics directors since commencement of programming last June.
