Strong defensive effort propels Jackson State to double-digit win over Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Jackson State won its first conference matchup Monday night versus Alabama State 60-44.

Jackson State was led by senior point guard, Tristan Jarrett, who finished with 25 points on 8-of-16 scoring and four steals.

In the first half of play, Jackson State opened up on a 7-1 in the first four minutes of play. The Hornets took their first lead of the night at the 2:34 mark left in the first half, 20-19.

Jackson State closed the final two minutes of the half on an 8-0 run, taking a 27-20 lead into the break. Early in the second half, a Tristan Jarrett layup gave JSU a 33-22 lead.

The Tigers never looked back, running away with the contest and securing its first SWAC and overall victory on the season by a final score of 60-44.

Outside of Jarrett, who finished with a season-high 25 points on the night, the Tigers were given solid performances by Caianan McClelland, who had a season-best 14-points on 5-of-7 shooting, and Jayveous McKinnis, seven points, 13 rebounds, three steals, and three blocked shots. McClelland also finished with a team-best 4-of-6 from three-point territory.

Jonas James tallied eight points and four rebounds for the contest. As a team, Jackson State finished 20-of-51 (39.2 percent) from the field.
