SWAC announces suspensions following Jackson State and Prairie View altercation

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) has announced the suspension of three student-athletes, following an altercation involving the Jackson State University and Prairie View A&M University men’s basketball teams on Monday, February 17. Each of the individuals involved violated conference policy, Section III, Article 12, Item 3 (Acts of Unsportsmanlike Conduct and Penalties) of the SWAC Constitution, Bylaws and Sports Regulations.

After a comprehensive review of the postgame video footage, two Jackson State student-athletes (Dontelius Ross and Khalil Spencer) and one student-athlete from Prairie View A&M ( Darius Williams) were found to have been in violation.

Thus, Jackson State student-athletes Dontelius Ross and Khalil Spencer have been suspended for the Tigers next two games on Saturday, February 22, at Grambling State and Saturday, February 29, vs. Mississippi Valley State.

Prairie View A&M student-athlete Darius Williams has been suspended for the Panthers’ next two games on Saturday, February 22, at Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Monday, February 24, at Mississippi Valley State.

“The Southwestern Athletic Conference will continue to send a clear message that this type of behavior will not be tolerated,” said SWAC Commissioner Dr. Charles McClelland. “Moving forward any future actions of this nature; that transpire at any point during an athletic contest, will result in an indefinite suspension with substantial fines/penalties to all parties involved. The Conference office must uphold high standard of good sportsmanship and any conduct deemed detrimental to those efforts will be handled appropriately.”

In addition to the suspensions, the Southwestern Athletic Conference has levied fines in the amount of $5,000 against both Jackson State and Prairie View A&M.
