SWAC Football Players of the Week – Oct. 7




BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama A&M’s Aqeel Glass, Grambling State’s Deandre McCarthy, Texas Southern’s Richard Garcia III and Alcorn State’s Niko Duffey were all named the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Football Players of the Week in week six of the season for their outstanding play the league announced on Monday.

Offensive
Alabama A&M
Aqeel Glass (6-4, 215, Jr., QB, St. Louis, Mo.)
Glass passed for 377 yards and four touchdowns, completing 28-of-38 attempts with no interceptions as Alabama A&M topped Texas Southern 35-28 for a conference win in overtime. Glass threw touchdown passes of 73, 57, 20 and 12 yards. His 12-yard touchdown pass to Abdul-Fatai Ibrahim was the eventual game-winner. Glass has passed for more than 300 yards in four of Alabama A&M’s six games this season.

Defensive
Grambling State
Deandre McCarthy (5-11, 210, Sr., LB, Winnsboro, La.)
McCarthy was a huge factor for the Grambling State Tigers in their road win at Jackson State as he turned in a team-high 10 tackles highlighted by three tackles for loss and one sack. GSU defeated Jackson State by a score of 44-21 as the Tigers captured their first win of the season.

Specialist
Texas Southern
Richard Garcia III (5-10, 150, Fr., K, Mesquite, Texas)
Connected on two field goal attempts (37, 24 yards) and 2 PATs for 8 total points. Also recorded three touchbacks on kickoffs.

Newcomer
Alcorn State  
Niko Duffey (5-11, 175, Fr., RB, Tampa, Fla.)
Duffey rushed for a game-high 101 yards in Alcorn’s 35-7 victory over Alabama State on Saturday. He also scored a touchdown as he broke loose for a 67-yarder. Duffey also recorded a 24-yard rush in the first quarter. He averaged 11.2 yards per carry. It was his second 100-yard rushing game of the season.
