SWAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week – Jan. 7




BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- Arkansas-Pine Bluff forward Markedric Bell has been named SWAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week following an impressive outing versus Mississippi Valley State.

Bell had a career-high game in his home state in a dominant performance in the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions Southwestern Athletic Conference opener at Mississippi Valley State.

He scored 26 of his 33 points in the second half, and also scored those 26 points consecutively for the Golden Lions over a seven-plus minute span as UAPB scored a season-high 55 points in the second half.

Bell’s eight rebounds in the contest were his second-highest total of the season.

Other notable performances:

Tristan Jarrett (JSU) finished with a team-high 31 points on 10-of-21 shooting from the field, 10 made free throws, six rebounds and two steals in a 70-67 victory over Alabama State in their SWAC opener. Jarrett currently leads the Tigers with an average of 20.3 ppg and 25 steals.

Maurice Howard (ALCN) averaged 24.0 points per game over the weekend. He posted a career-high 31 points in the win over Texas Southern on Monday. He was 5-for-8 from three and 14-for-15 from the free-throw line. Howard’s 14 free throws made were the third-most all-time in school history in a single-game. It came after he scored a team-high 17 points against Prairie View A&M on Saturday.
