Tennessee State to study possibility of starting first-ever HBCU hockey program

No HBCU has ever offered ice hockey as a sport, but Tennessee State is considering the possibility.

A report by the Nashville Post indicated that Tennessee State officials are “looking into starting an NCAA Division I ice hockey program.”

From the Nashville Post:

The school will reportedly announce soon announce plans to conduct a feasibility study with the goal of determining the viability of starting a hockey program at TSU as well as how much fundraising would need to be done. If officials push on from there, TSU’s would be the first Division I hockey team in the history of the country’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

The report also suggested that a partnership between the school and the Nashville Predators could be forged. The organizations already have established a relationship through a “$1 million in 1 month” fundraising scholarship campaign for Tennessee State students.
