Tessa Thompson Inks First Look Deal At HBO And HBO Max, Will Produce 'Who Fears Death' And 'The Secret Lives Of Church Ladies'

Tessa Thompson is Hollywood’s newest producer, complete with a brand new deal.

According to Deadline, Thompson has created her own production company, Viva Maude. With Viva Maude, Thompson has also agreed to a two-year first-look deal with HBO and HBO Max, which includes executive producing the TV adaptations of Nnedi Okrafor’s North Africa-set post-apocalyptic book Who Fears Death and Deesha Philyaw’s short story collection The Secret Lives of Church Ladies.

In a statement, Thompson said that she is “beyond thrilled” to launch her production company and sign with HBO and HBO Max. Calling Viva Maude “a real passion project and labour of love,” she said she’s excited to create diverse stories with the network and streaming service.

“I’m elated to begin this partnership and to bring entertaining and impactful television projects to my friends and collaborators at HBO and HBO Max,” she said. “Together we are committed to developing interesting and inclusive stories with inventive creators and to discover new voices and visionaries.”
