Texas Southern notches double-digit win over first-place Southern

PJ Henry and Johnathan Cisse combined for 40 points as the Texas Southern men’s basketball team held the game early on, defeating Southern University 68-56 on Monday Night.

After a tie at eight, a jumper by Dre’Shawn Allen would put the Jaguars (16-10 Overall, 10-3 SWAC) on top 10-8, with 14 minutes left in the first half, but that would be Southern’s only lead as Texas Southern (10-14, 8-5) showed no mercy for the remainder of the game.

Kenny Hunter sparked the lead for the Tigers with back-to-back shots, including a dunk, then a layup assisted by Cisse. After an exchange of baskets with Texas Southern leading 14-13, the Tigers used a 14-4 run capped by a pair of free-throws by Cisse to lead 28-17 with 3:24 remaining in the first half.

Down the stretch, the game got as close as 60-53 after a three-pointer by Tidjiane Dioumassi. But TSU refused to go away quietly as they used an 8-3 run to close out the game.

Henry led the Tiger offense with a game-high 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field, including being 5-of-8 from behind the arc. Cisse followed with 17 points and four steals. Kenny Hunter chipped in 11 points, five rebounds, and two blocks.

Southern was paced by Brandon Davis, who registered 14 points, while Dioumassi added 13 points and eight assists.
