This little used QB stood out in the Jackson State spring game

Virginia Tech transfer quarterback Jason Brown appears to be the leader in the clubhouse to start for Jackson State if the annual spring game on Saturday is any indication.

But a possible challenger at the position stepped up to assert himself for the job.

Greyson Thompson, who was a redshirt, was impressive, going 5-of-6 for 87 yards with a 35-yard  touchdown pass to receiver Kobe Paul during his time under center in various situations playing against the first-team defense.

“He’s just been fighting for his time,” Jackson State first-year head coach T.C. Taylor told The Clarion-Ledger. “I just tell him to be patient and when you get those opportunities to get out there and take advantage of them and let it fly. I thought he made a great throw to Kobe Paul today for a touchdown.”

The North Texas transfer was previously down on the depth chart behind starter Shedeur Sanders and backup J.P. Andrade, who entered the transfer portal following the 2022 season.

As for Brown, who took the majority of the snap during the spring game, went 5-of-9 passing for 120 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

“He’s a veteran and he is a one-and-done guy,” Taylor said of Brown. “He has one year to go out there and kind of show us and the world what he can do on a big stage. We ask him to step up and be a leader, we expect him to grasp the offense, which he has done. He has been doing a good job.”
