Three HBCU teams selected to the Division II playoff field

It is officially playoff time in Division II football and there will be a solid HBCU presence with three teams being selected to represent in Super Region II.

Coming off their first-ever SIAC championship win, Benedict enters the DII playoffs as the No. 1 seed in the region and will have a first-round bye. The Tigers add another first to its resume as they make the postseason field for the first time.

The Tigers are coming off a 58-21 demolition of Tuskegee in the SIAC championship game to improve to 11-0.

The Virginia Union Panthers — in the playoffs for the first time since 2015 — make it into the field as a No. 4 seed and host a first-round matchup on Saturday against Wingate.

Virginia Union finished the regular season with a 9-1 overall record, including a 7-1 record against the CIAA. Their lone loss during the year against Chowan prevented them from qualifying for a conference championship berth.

Rounding out the HBCU Division II playoff selections are the CIAA champion Fayetteville State who will go on the road to play the No. 2 seed Delta State.

This is the Broncos first playoff appearance since the last time they won the CIAA in 2009. Fayetteville State claimed the CIAA title in dramatic fashion winning with a walk-off 43-yard field goal by Elton Andrew. They enter this game with a 9-2 overall record.
