WATCH: Delaware State volleyball team reacts to newly renovated locker room

Dover, Del. — Returning and new Delaware State volleyball players received a welcomed surprise upon their return to campus. The Hornet volleyball coaches greeted the 2020 team in a newly renovated locker room in their Memorial Hall home.

The project, made possible by gifts and donations from friends of the Hornet volleyball program, includes new and expanded lockers, new carpeting and furniture, along with a widescreen television.

“We are extremely excited about the renovation of the volleyball locker room,” said Delaware State second-year head volleyball coach Dr. Bruce Atkinson.” It’s nice to have something positive occur during this time of uncertainty while the student-athletes were away from campus. This project would not have been possible without the assistance and support of DSU’s athletics administration and volleyball alumni, along with the Hornet Athletics Booster Club and several individuals and businesses throughout our community. All of their support is greatly appreciated.”

Senior outside hitter Mayah Ngundam, the longest-tenured player on the team, gives her seal of approval to the new locker room.

“If you compare our locker room when I arrived here to what we have now, it’s like two different places,” Ngundam said. I am truly amazed and grateful to say the least.”

“The new locker room really adds to the new atmosphere we’re creating as a team,” said junior defensive specialist Nia Scott. “I’m excited to be a part of all the positive things we’re expecting this season and years to come.”

Senior setter Jelena Dukic added, “The new locker room and other changes that have occurred since I arrived last year are very exciting and a great source of pride. I want to thank everyone who contributed to the project and we will make sure to properly show our gratitude on the court.”

DSU’s fall 2020 season is currently slated to be played in the spring, pending conditions surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and NCAA scheduling guidelines for fall championships being played in the spring. The season is also expected to feature division-only play, with the Hornets competing against fellow MEAC North members Howard, Morgan State, Coppin State, Maryland-Eastern Shore and Norfolk State. The conference championship tournament will be held in Norfolk, Va.
