‘Yellowstone’ Is Ending: Everything We Know About The Sequel Series

Yellowstone is opening a new chapter in its saga at Paramount.

The flagship series is ending after its fifth season, according to Variety, making way for a sequel series which has already been greenlit. The cast announcement will be revealed in the coming days. However, as Variety reports, Matthew McConaughey is thought to be in talks to star.

Yellowstone has been the cornerstone on which we have launched an entire universe of global hits – from 1883 to Tulsa King, and I am confident our Yellowstone sequel will be another big hit, thanks to the brilliant creative mind of Taylor Sheridan and our incredible casts who bring these shows to life,” said Chris McCarthy, President & CEO Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios, in a statement.

The new series will debut this December on Paramount Network and later on Paramount+. The final episodes of Yellowstone will air in November. The flagship series has boasted the title of the number one series on television, with Season 5A garnering a record-breaking 17 million total viewers.

Yellowstone‘s end comes after speculation that the series’ lead, Kevin Costner, would leave the series to focus more on two-part Western film series Horizon, according to Variety.

The sequel series, according to Variety, gives Paramount the opportunity to keep the Yellowstone brand going without Costner as well as stream a new Yellowstone series on its own streaming service, since the flagship series streams on rival Peacock.

Created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, Yellowstone follows the lucrative Dutton family as they maintain their cattle empire amid conflicting factions. According to the official description:

Yellowstone chronicles the Dutton family, led by John Dutton (Kevin Costner), who controls the largest contiguous cattle ranch in the United States. Amid shifting alliances, unsolved murders, open wounds, and hard-earned respect – the ranch is in constant conflict with those it borders – an expanding town, an Indian reservation, and vicious business rivalries.

Yellowstone is executive produced by Sheridan, Linson, Costner, David C. Glasser, Bob Yari, Stephen Kay and Christina Voros.
